Most musicians I know putting music out on common platforms have asked me what the ideal loudness level is to avoid having a platform warp their music with normalization. The headline is that you can master as loud as you like in the year of our lord 2026. Just don't master quieter than the standard. 

Below is the specific breakdown, platform by platform.

What is LUFS, and why do streaming platforms use it?

It’s important to understand what loudness actually means. LUFS, which is probably the one you hear about all the time, measures how loud music feels to a human ear, not simply how high the peaks, or proper levels go. Two numbers matter to you as the musician. 

Integrated LUFS is the average loudness across the entire song, and it's the number streaming platforms use. 

Short-term LUFS measures a few seconds at a time and tells you how loud that portion in particular is.

Platforms measure the integrated loudness of every track themselves and adjust playback to a reference level in an effort to keep consistency for their users. This is called loudness normalization, and it’s why this is a pain in the ass to do now. In the past normalization has impacted the actual quality of your track, introducing compression and other artifacts you want to avoid.

Does Spotify turn down loud songs?

According to Spotify's own documentation, tracks are adjusted to -14 LUFS during playback, and for loud masters "no additional distortion occurs." That being said, anecdotally I have absolutely heard louder music on Spotify. 

The good news is Spotify measures your track at upload but does not reprocess the file. Albums are normalized as a whole, so your dynamics stay the same. 

Nowadays, I target -9 LUFS at the aggressive end because it really, really seems like Spotify enables a track mastered to this level to sound louder than a track mixed at -14 LUFS. I’d bet money on it. 

Quiet tracks are a different story. Spotify turns them up, but only as far as your peaks allow, keeping 1 dB of headroom. A track at -20 LUFS with peaks at -5 dB only gets lifted to -16 LUFS, so it still plays softer than everything around it. 

Premium listeners can also choose a Loud setting (-11 LUFS), which runs soft tracks through a limiter, but I don’t know anyone who actually does that, and the limiter is changing how your song sounds. That's the only case where Spotify touches your dynamics, and it only applies to quieter masters. The best way to avoid this is not have quiet masters.

What LUFS does Apple Music use?

Apple Music normalizes to -16 LUFS through a feature called Sound Check, following the Audio Engineering Society's recommendation for music streaming. Sound Check is on by default for new installations of iOS and macOS, though listeners can turn it off. Its main job is bringing loud tracks down. Since -16 is quieter than Spotify's reference, a master built for -14 works fine on Apple. Apple does not apply any additional processing, at least that they have stated. 

What about YouTube, Tidal and Amazon Music?

All three use roughly -14 LUFS, and all three turn loud tracks down without boosting quiet ones. That's the strongest argument against a quiet master: on these services, a gentle -18 LUFS master just sounds smaller than the song before it. 

Tidal also takes albums into account. Amazon lets listeners disable normalization, and it's worth leaving a little extra true peak headroom there.

Does SoundCloud normalize loudness?

Yes, although older guides say it doesn't. SoundCloud's help center now recommends mastering to -14 LUFS integrated with true peak below -1 dBTP, and below -2 dBTP if your master is louder than -14.

Where does a loud master stay loud?

Normalization isn't universal. Spotify's web player, many TVs and smart speakers, Bandcamp, and any listener who turns the feature off will play your file exactly as delivered. That's one more reason quiet is the riskier choice, and an easy one to avoid. In those places, a quiet master is just quiet.

What is true peak, and why -1 dBTP?

Your DAW's peak meter shows the loudest stored sample. It doesn't show what happens between samples when a converter or streaming codec rebuilds the waveform. That rebuilt peak, measured in dBTP (decibels true peak), can land a decibel or more above what your meter showed.

Every platform converts your WAV to a lossy format like AAC. A hot master with no headroom can distort during that conversion, and turning the track down afterward doesn't repair it. This is the one real cost of mastering loud. 

Keep true peak below -1 dBTP (always, always), and below -2 dBTP if your master is louder than -14 LUFS. Spotify and SoundCloud both recommend exactly this.

Why do two songs at -14 LUFS sound different?

Because LUFS is an average, not a measure of impact. Two masters at the same integrated loudness can feel completely different depending on mix balance, low-end weight, midrange density, and how much transient snap survived the limiter. A punchy master at -10 LUFS can arrive with more impact than a crushed one at -7, because both get turned down to the same level and only one still has its dynamics.

Aiming for loud is fine, but the volume knob can't undo how you got there. 

So how loud should you master?

Let the genre and the song decide, as long as you land at -14 LUFS or louder. Commercial pop, hip-hop, electronic and heavy music often end up somewhere between -10 and -6 LUFS integrated, and that's fine as long as the master still sounds alive. Quieter, dynamic music can sit closer to -14. Protect your true peak, reference your mix against a few released tracks in your genre at matched loudness, and let normalization handle the rest.

For whatever reason I almost always master to -9 LUFS and it sounds fine.

Should I master to exactly -14 LUFS?

No. -14 LUFS is Spotify's playback reference, not a mastering requirement. Master to whatever loudness suits the music, as long as it's -14 or louder with true peak below -1 dBTP.

Does mastering louder than -14 LUFS hurt my song on Spotify?

Not directly. Spotify just turns it down, with no extra processing. The only cost is any dynamics you gave up during mastering to get it that loud.

What happens if my master is quieter than -14 LUFS?

On YouTube, Tidal and Amazon, it plays quieter than other songs. On Spotify, it gets turned up only as far as your peaks allow, and in Loud mode it may be limited.

Does loudness normalization change my mix?

No. Turning a track down is a straight volume change. The only processing happens when a platform boosts a quiet track, as with Spotify's Loud setting.

Do I need a different master for each platform?

Usually not. One master at -14 LUFS or louder, with true peak at -1 dBTP (-2 if louder than -14), works nearly everywhere. Some engineers make a separate louder master for platforms that don't normalize, like Bandcamp.

What is the difference between LUFS and dB?
