Shoegaze Recording Studio in Brooklyn
The wall is the point. We do not carve it.
Shoegaze has a specific studio problem: many engineers see six guitar tracks and immediately apply aggressive EQ and compression to make it all fit together. Everything gets cleaned up and separated, but what comes back sounds more like arena rock than shoegaze.
Shoegaze is built on density, phase interaction, and the right balance between compression and space. Getting that wrong is easy. Getting it right requires a little love of the genre.
What we bring to a shoegaze record
We let the textures you’re building with your pedals and amps speak for themselves. We track shoegaze guitars with no EQ or compression on the way in. The Vox AC30HW2X and the Fender 1968 Twin Reverb run simultaneously with the Big Muff or Rat between the guitar and the amp. Royer R-121 ribbons on both cabs.
The Little Labs IBP phase alignment tool on one of the two mic signals to time-align without losing the interaction. The BAE 1073MP's midrange presence keeps the guitar stacks from turning to mush in the mix, which is the specific thing the Neve 8424 and this preamp combination does particularly well for this genre. Neumann U 67 on vocals through LA-2A, then let it sit behind the guitars where it belongs.
Approaches you may like…
-
Guitar: Vox AC30HW2X and Fender 1968 Twin Reverb simultaneously, Electro-Harmonix Big Muff (vintage) or ProCo Rat in front
-
Guitar mics: Royer R-121 pair on both cabs, no tracking EQ, no compression, API 312 preamp
-
Phase alignment: Little Labs IBP on one cab signal, critical for multi-amp capture
-
Vocals: Neumann U 67 into BAE 1073MP, Universal Audio LA-2A at moderate ratio
-
Synth/texture: Moog Grandmother for sustained tones and filter sweeps layered under guitar
-
Drum tuning: loose, ambient, Coles 4038 overheads pulled further back than usual
-
Effects: Chase Bliss Generation Loss on vocal send for tape-degraded chorus and reverb textures
-
Console: Neve 8424, BAE 1073MP midrange character prevents mid-scooped mush in layered stacks
-
Bus: Serpent SB4001 bus compressor at low ratio for glue without squashing the dynamics
You track it. We mix it.
Send us your session files and we mix them through the Neve 8424 console at 610 Dean Street. Your guitars go through real amps in a real room. Your drums get the same preamp chain we use for in-studio sessions. You get back a mix that sounds like it was made by people who listen to the music you make.
How it works:
-
Export your tracks as WAV stems, 24-bit minimum, consolidated from bar 1
-
Send us a reference mix or reference records so we know what you are chasing
-
We mix through the Neve 8424 with our full outboard chain
-
Re-amping available: send DI guitar and bass tracks and we run them through the amps in the room
-
Two rounds of revisions included
-
Turnaround: 5-7 business days on most projects
