Post-Punk Recording Studio in Brooklyn

Dry. Up-front.

Post-punk gets mishandled in studios that do not understand the genre's relationship with space and tension. Too much reverb and it loses the dread. Too little and it sounds like a pub rock recording. The kick drum and bass have to be right before anything else matters, and the kick tuning is unconventional.

What we bring to a post-punk record

We have a Roland JC-120 in the room for a solid-state clean, twin-speaker spread, with built-in chorus when you want it. This the sound that built the genre, and don’t overcomplicate it. Fender Precision Bass into the Ampeg SVT, MD 421 on kick for tight articulate low-end rather than the boomy Beta 52A sound. Everything is tracked dry and the vocal sits upfront. The BAE 1073MP on bass and vocals gives the Neve 8424 mix its mid-forward character. This signal path mirrors what you hear on the records that defined the genre.

Approaches you may like:

  • Guitar: Roland JC-120 (primary), Vox AC30HW2X (alternative for more breakup)

  • Guitar mic: SM57 on cab or line out direct into Neve 8424, BAE 1073MP preamp

  • Bass: Fender Precision Bass, Ampeg SVT Heritage, SM57 on cab plus DI through BAE 1073MP

  • Kick: Sennheiser MD 421 (tight articulate attack, not boomy), API 3124V

  • Snare: Ludwig Supraphonic tuned high and tight, SM57 top and bottom, API 3124V

  • Overheads: Coles 4038 pair into BAE 1073MP

  • Vocals: Neumann U 87 Ai or Telefunken M80 into BAE 1073MP, dry, upfront

  • Console: Neve 8424, mid-forward character sits bass and vocals correctly

  • Bus: minimal compression, Serpent SB4001 at low ratio

You track it. We mix it.

Send us your session files and we mix them through the Neve 8424 console at 610 Dean Street. Your guitars go through real amps in a real room. Your drums get the same preamp chain we use for in-studio sessions. You get back a mix that sounds like it was made by people who listen to the music you make.

How it works:

  • Export your tracks as WAV stems, 24-bit minimum, consolidated from bar 1

  • Send us a reference mix or reference records so we know what you are chasing

  • We mix through the Neve 8424 with our full outboard chain

  • Re-amping available: send DI guitar and bass tracks and we run them through the amps in the room

  • Two rounds of revisions included

  • Turnaround: 5-7 business days on most projects
